BlackBerry launches security-focused Leap touchscreen phone

TELEGRAPH.CO.UK: BlackBerry has unveiled a new touchscreen smartphone aimed squarely at young professionals at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, putting heavy emphasis on the device's privacy and security features.

The BlackBerry Leap features a five-inch HD display, BlackBerry’s latest operating system and more than a full day’s battery power. It is equipped with support for encryption, as well as built-in malware protection and back-up, wipe and restore.

"In today's mobile world, where personal and corporate data are frequently under attack from hackers, companies and everyday consumers are finding out the hard way that mobile security is paramount," said Ron Louks, BlackBerry's president of devices and emerging solutions.

"BlackBerry Leap was built specifically for mobile professionals who see their smartphone device as a powerful and durable productivity tool that also safeguards sensitive communications at all times."

The BlackBerry Leap features BlackBerry’s touchscreen keyboard, which learns how the user writes over time and helps to correct their mistakes, as well as BlackBerry Blend, which lets users get notifications, emails, BBM, text messages and documents on any device.

It features a 2MP front-facing camera and 8MP rear camera capable of capturing full 1080p HD video, while the 2,800mAH lithium ion battery is capable of delivering up to 25 hours of heavy use.

BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 also includes BlackBerry’s first digital assistant, which can be used with voice and text commands to help users manage work and personal email, contacts, calendar and other native apps.

BlackBerry claims it is the only smartphone assistant on the market today that can access both personal and work content, and intelligently determines how to respond to you based on how you interact with it.

The BlackBerry Leap joins the BlackBerry Classic and BlackBerry Passport as part of the company's new lineup of devices, with which it hopes to turn its fortunes around.
